FLHSMV inspection of location to approve place of business
FLHSMV requires all prospective VI dealership licensees to obtain a non residential location where their used auto dealer services will be conducted. Again, non-residential, so a house where people would live is not acceptable to operate a dealer in Florida.
- If you will obtain your dealership license under a company, you must:
- File for incorporation/organization on Sunbiz. Generally, a Limited Liability Company (LLC) is a simple structure recommended for most small businesses; however, you should speak to an experienced accountant/attorney-at-law for recommendations tailored to your specific needs.
- Upon approval for your filing on Sunbiz, apply for your company’s FederalEmployer Identification Number (FEIN), which is required for companies requesting a Site Pre-Inspection.
- Once you have chosen a suitable location, you must fill out the Dealer Site Pre-Inspection Checklist. Please note Page 3, Section 5 asks for labeled photos of several places in the location. You must take these pictures, print them, and label them accordingly.
Submit this completed application to the Motorist Services Regional Office responsible for the county where the to-be dealer is located. The list of FLHSMV offices can be found on their website at https://www.flhsmv.gov/locations. Choose the appropriate county and then scroll down to “Motorist Services Regional Office.” The office which shows up there is responsible for the administration of dealer licenses in that county.
